Before reading my email mini-course, you might be interested in reading the list of powerful energy saving techniques below:

Basic Techniques for Saving Home Energy

  1. One of the first things you should do is lower the temperature of your thermostat or water heater. This is one of the simplest ways to trim off some dollars from your energy bills. It is also recommended by most energy experts as a primary saving home energy technique. Energy Star thermostats are really a great solution to this problem as you can program them to change their temperature at certain times of the day, which is very convenient.
  2. Ensure that all the appliances you are using in your home are adjusted for optimal energy saving functioning. Also, be sure that you are not using too old appliances as they consume much, much more energy as they get older and older.
  3. Go around your home and see if any areas are still using incandescent light bulbs. Replace these light bulbs with energy saving equivalents – like 60-100 Watt fluorescent light bulbs as these use 25% of the energy that incandescent bulbs use; they are also much brighter and last up to 10 times longer.
  4. From your local hardware store, go ahead and get yourself some faucet aerators as well as a low flow shower head for your bathtub. You can find these easily in regular home improvement shops and they help control excessive water usage and also prevent leakage.
  5. Have a look at your water heater. Depending on how old or new it is, it will have different insulation types. If your water heater is currently being insulated by a fiberglass overlay, then you should consider buying a heater blanket for it; again from your local hardware store.
  6. Fix any cracks and holes around door edges, windows and any internal-to-external outlets, utility penetrations and anything that you may feel a draft coming out from.
  7. Have a good look at the overall heating and cooling system that your house is using. Old heating systems can eat away up to twice as much energy as newer energy saving equivalents. If your heating and cooling systems are old, consider buying new ones as soon as possible.
  8. Although this technique in itself doesn’t save energy, it is still a great thing to do as a preliminary. Go through your home energy bills and dissect them – group them into electricity, gas, water etc. Then, make a priority list and target the groups that are using more energy first.
  9. Attic insulation is crucial. You should analyze your attic and determine whether or not it has enough insulation. If not, you must urgently address this and get at least 2cm deep insulation.
  10. Just like in step 5, ensure that any hot water pipes and ducts are insulated with jackets. This helps them keep the heat inside rather than letting it out and making you need to heat the water more.
  11. Just like other parts of your home that need to keep in heat, your walls also needed to be insulated appropriately. The question is not if you have insulation or not – it is rather a question of how new and high quality your insulation is. You can get contractors to apply various types of insulation in your walls. This is best done by professionals.
  12. The best way to save energy is to get a team of professionals to conduct a home energy audit for your home. This will allow you to have a complete breakdown of exactly where and how your home energy is being used so you can make the necessary changes to save home energy by a greater amount.
